Sciatica

Sciatica is pain that travels from the low back or buttock down the leg along the sciatic nerve. It is usually a symptom rather than a diagnosis, most often caused by a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or a nerve compressed by tight muscle.

Finding the Cause

Because sciatica has several possible sources, the exam matters. We assess reflexes, strength and sensation, image the spine when appropriate, and use EMG and nerve conduction testing to confirm which nerve root is affected.
